Delta Information

What is the DELTA?

The Diploma in English laguage teaching to Adults is the qualification which has now replaced the DTEFLA and its aim is to provide specialised training for experienced English language teachers. From September 2000 all diploma courses have run as DELTA courses.

ITTC was involved in the first round of piloting in the UK in 1998 and by the end of 2003 will have successfully run fourteen full-time and six part-time DELTA courses. The scheme is administered by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate who approve centres to run courses and every course is moderated by an external assessor.

What do I have to do on the course?

The overall course requirements are specified by Cambridge and then individual centres design their course programme to fulfil these requirements. Courses are designed to ensure a balance between the demands of practical application and understanding of the theoretical background.

Our courses at ITTC are designed to help you gain the diploma and make the course an enjoyable learning experience - although the course is very intensive and you must be prepared for this. ITTC courses have input sessions on language and teaching methodology in the mornings, and teaching/observation in the afternoons. The input sessions will focus on: language awareness; the background to teaching and learning English at adult level; resources and materials; working in the classroom; evaluation, monitoring and assessment; professional development.

Our full-time courses last just over 8 weeks. Most days you will be at the centre from 9.00 to 17.30 (approximately). Each course is individually designed by the course tutors to respond to the individual needs of candidates on the course.

How will I be assessed?

To meet the course requirements candidates must attend the whole course and complete the various components of the course. There are three components of the assessment:

You must pass all the components to gain the Diploma.

So, what does this mean in practice?

Coursework
This includes both non-assessed (e.g. observation, professional development etc.), and assessed work. The assessed work consists of seven assignments, five of which include an assessed teaching component. One of the assignments which includes a teaching component is externally assessed, all the other assignments are internally assessed and externally moderated.

Extended Assignment
This is a case study of a learner and is designed and supervised by the centre and externally assessed.

Written Examination
This is a three and a half hour paper which is externally set and marked. The examination is provided twice a year in June and December and candidates would normally be expected to sit the first available examination following their course at ITTC. The examination consists of three questions in three parts.

How do I apply?

First you need to complete the application form and the pre-interview task. Send these with a recent lesson plan and we will arrange an interview. We prefer you to come to ITTC for your interview, but if this is impractical we may be able to arrange a telephone interview. At the interview you will have the opportunity to meet some of the tutors and tour the school. You will discuss the requirements of the DELTA and your previous teaching experience and do some work on language awareness. The tutor conducting the interview will then be able to assess how much preparation you will need to do for your course. Remember the interview is a two-way process, and will be your chance to find out everything you need to know.

The course tutors at ITTC are all highly qualified with a wide range of experience. Tutors involved on DELTA courses will often be assessors or examiners for UCLES. Have a look at the staff. You will have all the facilities you need to complete the course successfully - we have a comprehensive library with all the materials you need for your research, and a modern networked multi-media centre. Have a look around the building.
