ITTC Certificate in TESOL

What is the CTESOL?

The ITTC Certificate in TESOL is intended for speakers whose first language is not English hoping to gain some experience in teaching English language learners.

It aims to provide introductory training for those with little or no previous experience of teaching languages.

How do I qualify for the course?

Entry Requirements:
As a candidate, you should normally:

  • be a minimum of 20 years old;
  • have completed secondary education;
  • have a level of written and spoken English which enables you to follow the course (level B2 on the CEFR).

What do I have to do on the course?)

You will be attached to one of the CELTA courses running at ITTC and will follow exactly the same programme as the CELTA candidates except in the teaching practice, where you will only teach at lower levels.

The course is highly practical in emphasis and will require a lot of hard work and commitment from you.  Input sessions each morning will help you develop your own language awareness, become familiar with the principles and practice of effective English language teaching and put ideas into practice during supervised teaching practice.

You will also complete a number of written assignments to show your ability to analyse language for teaching purposes, evaluate materials and assess learners’ language.

You will have the opportunity to discuss your work in detail during your individual tutorials.

An ITTC Certificate in TESOL is awarded on successful completion of the course.

The full-time course lasts four weeks and is highly intensive.  Teaching practice and lesson observation take place at the Centre.

How do I apply?

First you need to complete and submit the application form. After we have received this we will send you some tasks to complete and arrange an interview. We prefer you to come to ITTC for your interview, but if this is not practical we may be able to arrange a telephone or Skype interview.
At the interview - usually held in groups of three or four - you will have the opportunity to tour the school, meet candidates who are part way through a course (You can ask them for survival tips!) and tutors. You may also be invited to watch some teaching practice. This should give you an idea of the nature of the course. You will also do some work on language awareness so that the tutor conducting the interview will then be able to assess how much preparation you will need to do for your course.
Remember the interview is a two-way process, and will be your chance to find out everything you need to know. Feel free to ask any questions you like.

Why choose ITTC? (anchor 5)

ITTC has been running teacher training courses since we started in 1984 and trained over 4000 candidates to certificate level. We offer courses every month throughout the year.
We have a team of permanent trainers at the centre. This means that you can get support both before and after your course. All tutors at ITTC are highly qualified, with a wide range of experience, both teaching overseas and in the UK. Many of the tutors involved on CELTA courses are either senior assessors or assessors for the CELTA scheme.  Meet our staff.
You will have all the facilities you need to complete the course successfully - we have an extremely comprehensive library with all the materials you need for your research, and a modern networked multi-media centre. This means that you can use our email and word processing facilities. You may also like to research ideas for your lessons on the Internet.  Have a look around the building.
