Overseas Teacher's Courses

About ITTC

International Teaching and Training Centre was founded in 1984 and ITTC, as it is often known, is now one of the largest private teacher training centres in the UK. In 2001 ITTC became a division of BEET Language Centre in Bournemouth, and the backing of such a successful language centre has allowed ITTC to expand the range of courses offered. Since 1984 the Centre has trained around 5000 teachers - more than 300 a year - from all over the world, many of whom have been awarded the prestigious Cambridge CELTA or DELTA teaching qualifications.

ITTC has undertaken training programmes for overseas governments including Spain, Slovenia and the Czech Republic and for language schools in countries including South Korea, Poland, Spain and Italy.

ITTC’s team of teacher trainers are among the most experienced working in English language training today and many hold positions of responsibility as examiners and assessors with the University of Cambridge Examinations Syndicate (UCLES).

ITTC is located in Bournemouth, a town of outstanding beauty on the south coast of England and within easy reach of London and other cities of historical interest including Oxford and Bath. Bournemouth is second only to London in importance as a centre for English language teaching in the UK and ITTC is responsible for organising the in-service training of the teachers who work in the many local language schools in the town.

ITTC has first-class study facilities including two computer rooms . The teacher training library is one of the most complete specialist English language teaching libraries in England. In addition to training teachers, BEET Language Centre is also an extremely successsful English language school and welcomes students from all over the world on its language courses throughout the year.

BEET is accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English as a foreign language, is a member of the Association of Recognised English Language Services (ARELS) and is also involved in the local English language schools association (RELSA). BEET / ITTC is validated as a centre for its English language teaching qualifications by the University of Cambridge.

About the course participants

The Overseas Teachers’ Course offers teachers the possibility of developing their insight into language teaching methodology and at the same time improving their command of English. The courses are intended for non-native speakers of English who have experience of teaching English as a foreign language or who have gained a teaching qualification in their own country and are considering a career in English language teaching. Participants should have a command of English at least equivalent to that required to pass the Cambridge First Certificate in English for course G1 or the Cambridge Proficiency in English for course G2. The courses bring together teachers from many different countries and this opportunity for participants to share ideas and experiences with each other has proved a very popular feature of training at ITTC. We can tailor make courses for primary or secondary school teachers.

Which course is available?

Course G1, which runs during July and August or at other times subject to a minimum of six participants, is designed for both primary and secondary school teachers, is very practical in content and consists of 20 x 45 minute sessions per week of language improvement and methodology plus 5 hours per week of self-access study in the Multi-Media Centre. For each self-contained week the programme will be drawn from selected areas of methodology and language and, by completing a pre-course questionnaire, teachers will also have the opportunity to add areas of methodology and language of their own choice.

Course G2, G2 is a 4-week course available from January to June and again from September to December. It is intended for practising secondary school and adult teachers. Entry to the course is subject to interview and, depending on the outcome of this interview, applicants may be offered the opportunity to follow the 4-week programme including 6 hours teaching practice. Applicants will be advised whether they are eligible to enter for the award of the University of Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA).

Course G3 ICELT (Cambridge's In-Service Certificate in English Language Teaching) is ideal if you are already teaching English in a specific context - e.g. teaching adults or young learners in the private sector, teaching within a university environment, teaching primary or secondary school learners. This qualification can help you to deepen your knowledge and develop your ability to reflect on and improve your teaching. Course programmes are designed to reflect your specific needs and working context. The main aim is to develop your skills in the following areas:

  • language awareness and language use in the classroom
  • planning, teaching and evaluation
  • assessment and evaluation.

With ICELT you will normally be assessed teaching your own classes. Your level of English should be at least level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages but ICELT is also suitable for first language speakers of English. ICELT is a new qualification, developed to replace the Certificate for Overseas Teachers of English (COTE).
