Teach at home and abroad with CELTA.
The CELTA is an initial certificate course in Teaching English Language to Speakers of Other Languages, often known as TEFL. It is designed for people with little or no experience in the English language classroom, or for those teachers who want to gain an internationally recognised qualification. It is awarded by Cambridge English Language Assessment, part of the University of Cambridge, and is the industry standard certificate course, with genuine global recognition. During the course you should acquire the skills, knowledge and experience to enable you to teach with confidence, and get the satisfaction of knowing you’re doing a great job for your students.
You may also receive Erasmus+ funding for the course through your school or organisation.

Key Facts: CELTA
CELTA: The right course for you?
If you would like to start your career teaching English language, or are already a teacher but want to gain an internationally recognised qualification in the field, the CELTA may be exactly the course for you. It is very practical in nature and you will teach our highly motivated, multinational adult learners from week one. The input sessions and assignments are also very practical, all helping you develop your language awareness and teaching skills to benefit your lessons. The CELTA is very rewarding and, although it also requires a lot of effort from you during the course, your teaching practice colleagues and course tutors will always be there to provide guidance and support. If English is not your first language, you’ll need to be an advanced speaker, with a minimum level of C1 or higher, so you can teach our B2 students. If your level is not quite high enough, you can study the same practical content as the CELTA on our ITTC Certificate in TESOL course.
For both CELTA and the ITTC TESOL course, there is a thorough interview procedure. When you apply, we will send you an interview task, with questions to help us see your language level, language awareness and teaching ideas. Then we will discuss your task with you at interview, either here in Bournemouth, by phone or over the internet, and you can ask any questions you have about the course and ITTC. It’s important to note that we want you to be as successful as possible so we will only offer you a place if we firmly believe it is the right course for you!
Course Content: CELTA
The ITTC CELTA is designed to teach you the principles of effective teaching, provide a range of practical skills for planning and teaching English to adult learners, and give you lots of hands-on teaching practice.
The course consists of:
- Two daily input sessions
- Lesson planning guidance
- 6 hours teaching practice
- Reflection and feedback sessions
- 6 hours observation of experienced teachers with real classes
You’ll cover the following syllabus areas:
- Learners and teachers and the teaching and learning context
- Language analysis and awareness
- Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
- Planning and resources for different teaching contexts
- Developing teaching skills and professionalism
On completion of the course you'll also receive one year's membership to Cambridge English Teacher Online Professional Development.
You’ll be continuously assessed on your planning, teaching and reflection, and on four classroom-related written assignments, which you’ll have a chance to resubmit after your tutor has given you some guidance. There is no final exam. The assessment is validated by an external assessor appointed by Cambridge who moderates the course. There are lots of opportunities for you to discuss your progress with a tutor, in feedback sessions and individual tutorials, so as to provide support, encouragement and guidance on areas to develop. Successful participants will meet the criteria needed to pass both the planning and teaching, and written assignments. You will then receive your Cambridge CELTA certificate approximately 6-8 weeks after the course, as well as your ITTC written report, indicating your strengths, any areas to work on, and overall progress.
Timetable: CELTA Full-Time
The full-time CELTA lasts 4 weeks and is very intensive, but very rewarding. As well as attending the whole course, you’ll also need to spend time in the evenings and at weekends on your lesson preparation and assignments, so it’s best not to have any other major commitments during the course. The following is an example to give you an indication of your typical weekly timetable.
Timetable: CELTA Part-Time
The part-time CELTA course runs in Spring and Autumn and lasts 15 weeks, with a one-week break halfway through. Input sessions are on Wednesday evenings and teaching practice is on Saturdays. You will also need to be available on two weekday mornings during the course for 90-minute observations of experienced teachers at BEET Language Centre in Bournemouth.
